OK, here we go. How to choose your fin:

Upon deciding which fin or which range of fins to use (2 regular good Z fins may be more than enough), you need to consider the following:

1. your board and sail combo;
2. your style and level of sailing skills;
3.  your weight;

1. Board and sail combo:

A sailor needs to know if he wants his sail and board to give him a lot of power or, vice versa, to be very free and fast.

If you have a big tail on your board and you are using a powerful sail, you will probably be better off with a smaller and free fin. You are already getting a lot of power from the sail and board. The last thing you need is a big fin that will just push you very high up and yet deprive you of speed.

If you want your sail and board to be a fast combo, you can go for speed but you do not point, then you need to look for a powerful fin (not necessarily big). In this case you will be using the power of the fin to go upwind and the speed of the rig and board to go fast.

2. Your sailing style:

If you are a technical sailor who wants to use every bit of a swell wave and every gust of wind to your advantage, you’ll probably want to use a softer fin. A softer fin gives you movement and flexibility which you can use to get just a bit more out of your rig and board when going upwind and downwind.

Go down the wave, wait for the right moment and push on the fin to get some extra speed or height.

If you want to just concentrate on the race on the water and on how to handle your rig, you are better off with a constant power fin. A bit stiffer fin goes safely and smoothly and you don't have to think about it at all, you just go!

3.  Your weight

Usually, heaver sailors need stiffer or bigger fins and lighter sailors prefer softer and smaller fins.

Z fins in general:

The Z fins is the one for every sailing style. Custom fins that fit your needs are the best.

The Evo S- is the fastest fin on the market for light winds and the Evo S is your ticket for control and winning races from 20 knots and above. It is just amazing in high wind!

In general, the Evo S-‘s are relatively softer in the smaller sizes and getting stiffer in the bigger sizes. For example, the 78 is a bit stiffer than the 70. The reason is that if a big fin like the 78 is too soft, it will start to drag as it will form  water resistance.

As you go bigger with the Evo S – fins, you get constant power, safety and stability. 
If you go smaller, you can use your technique to get speed and to play (see explanations above).
